The Dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus crispus) distinguished by its large size, is the largest pelican species and one of the heaviest flying birds. It’s easy to recognise by its curly nape feathers on its head (hence the "bad hair day" look) and silvery-white plumage; during breeding season the pouch turns vivid orange-red. It breeds from southeastern Europe through Russia to China, mainly on lakes and wetlands. They are one of the largest freshwater birds in the world and are classified as Near Threatened.
