Walking in the footsteps of gladiators. This is the Colosseum (Flavian Amphitheatre) in Rome, Italy. Completed in AD 80, the Colosseum is the largest ancient amphitheater ever built and once held tens of thousands of spectators for gladiator fights, animal hunts and public spectacles. The sheer scale of the Colosseum in Rome never fails to take the breath away. It’s impossible to grasp the size of this place until you stand right in front of it. The sheer number of tourists and horse-drawn carriages visible at the base gives a sense of the scale of the structure, which stands 48 meters (157 ft) tall.
